My Background

I attended M.I.T. for my undergraduate degree in Mathematics. (It really was a Computer Science degree, but they didn't have a major in Computer Science back then.) I received a Master's Degree and Doctorate in Computer Science from Stanford University. My doctoral research was done while I was at S.L.A.C., the Stanford Linear Accelerator; but I used the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory's computing facilities for my research work. My thesis involved computer graphics, computer languages, and the modeling of large-scale structures -- a field that now has become known as CAD (Computer Aided Design).

I taught in the EECS Department at UC Berkeley in the early 70's, taught in the Computer Science Department at the University of British Columbia in the late 70's, and have been working in the commercial sector since 1980. In the early 1980's I was one of the cofounders of General Parametrics Corporation (GPC), a company that specialized in presentation graphics systems. Among the products we produced was the VideoShow presentation hardware and PictureIt software. We went public a few years later. A decade later, the company was purchased and changed its focus. I worked for several companies after leaving GPC; and then decided to return to teaching. I joined the full time faculty in the Computer and Information Science Department at City College of San Francisco in Fall 1999. I held an appointment as an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at San Francisco State University from Fall 1998 through Spring 2001.

In August 2001, I joined the faculty at Sierra Nevada College (now Sierra Nevada University), where I am a Professor in the Department of Science and Technology. In spring 2002 I co-founded and became co-director of the Entertainment Technology (now Digital Entertainment) program at SNC. From February 2002 through September 2007 I served as SNC's webmaster. Additionally, from February 2002 through April 2005 I was SNC's Director of Information Technology Services. The University of Nevada Reno acquired SNC on July 1, 2022 and my association with SNC ceased at that time.
